Here is exactly what this item is:What you are buying here on Amazon is a START-UP KIT. This kit consists of an ACTIVATION FORM sealed inside a cardboard binder, and EXACT CONTACT INSTRUCTIONS.You zip open the cardboard, remove the Activation Form (with Activation Code), and contact Pitney Bowes by either (1) phone, (2) fax, (3) online, or (4) mail, to activate your account and get your equipment and supplies.
The Kit states that your package will arrive from Pitney Bowes in 3-5 days. What you will receive from Pitney Bowes is:
(1) postage meter - electric w/ battery backup; refillable over the phone on a 24/7 basis;
(2) postage scale - electric w/ battery backup; weighs items up to 5 lbs; precise to within 0.1 ounce;
(3) $10.00 in free postage applied to your account;
(4) an ink cartridge;
(5) 20 mailing tape labels for your packages;
(6) first month rent free (i.e.: included in the purchase of this Activation Kit).
Pitney Bowes states that items (3)-(6) are a $50.00 value.
THERE IS A ONE (1) YEAR LEASE COMMITTMENT WITH ACTIVATION.
(Note: you can never BUY a postage meter, from anyone. They are always LEASED.This is due to US Government regulations.)
Now, here's the kicker. I called Pitney Bowes regarding the precise model numbers, and was told the following: the pictured scale (model G-799) and meter (model E-700) are STILL AVAILABLE but - due to new USPS regulations - are obsolete and are being phased out.They MUST be replaced by the end of 2008 with the new digital version, which rents for a bit more.
The new digital version is a COMBINED digital scale/meter (model K-700), which comes in two types: (1) with a 2 pound scale @ $19.99 per month; or (2) a 5 pound scale @ $24.99 per month.The upside of this is that the new model is much more reliable and faster; the ink lasts twice as long; and operation is easier (automatic postage calculation based on weight and selected type of mailing).

As a small business owner I have saved a decent amount of money by using a postage meter every year it seems to be i save more. Nothing like saving money when you are paying money out all the time for employees and other things. If you don't have a postage meter already, I definitely recommend you invest in one as soon as you can.
